AASECT rejects the "sex addiction" diagnosis

American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) is responsible, in part, for sex therapy certifications that ensure health care providers are sufficiently skilled to address issues of sexuality with their patients. Dr. Ian Kerner, Chair of the Public Relations, Media & Advocacy Steering Committee of AASECT, provided a description of how and why the statement was made, including concerns about “sex addiction” being inconsistent with most empirically-supported models of sexual health. The position statement expressed a number of concerns, including that an “addiction” diagnosis would “unduly pathologize consensual sexual behaviors”, they did “not find sufficient empirical evidence to support the classification of sex addiction or porn addiction as a mental health disorder”, and “sexual addiction training and treatment methods and educational pedagogies to be adequately informed by accurate human sexuality knowledge”.
